Todays prompt: Fictional monsters/creatures that you would hate to encounter in real life.

Warning, some book spoilers are included in order to fully discuss my choices.

It was almost a little too easy coming up with a list of monster’s and creature’s I wouldn’t want to meet in real life (authors are scary good at coming up with horrifying creatures), but I narrowed it down to my top 5 to discuss with you all today.

One thing Ron Weasely and I have in common is our fear of spiders. So Aragog the Acromantula was one of the first creepy crawlies to come to mind for this list. An Acromantula is a rare giant spider whose venom is very useful for some potions. He first showed up in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in the Forbidden Forest. Whether reading about Aragog or watching the movie, the terror was not lost on me. I can only imagine the nightmarish situation that would put me face to face with such a gigantic spider (though it is possible I would scare him off with my Banshee shrieks).

The harpy is a Greek monster, with a women’s head and body and birds wings and claws. They are often agents of punishment, abducting and torturing their victims. I had read about them in mythology, but the first book to utilize these aggressive monsters was Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief. His substitute teacher trying to attack Percy was the beginning to his whirlwind introduction into discovering his half-blood status. If I saw a harpy coming after me, I’d run as fast as possible in the opposite direction.

A kappa is a mythical creature who inhabits ponds and rivers in Japan. I first encountered this creature in Tiger’s CurseOne of the main character’s Ren discussed the history of Kappa as creatures who tried to steal children bathing in the water and feed on their blood. The other main character Kelsey described the creatures as seahorse monkeys with a bowl like depression in the top of their heads. This bowl like depression must be filled with water at all times. The Kappa attacked Ren and Kelsey in the book, with one of the kappa biting Kelsey and nearly killing her. Vampire seahorse monkeys may sound absurd but I would imagine be pretty terrifying in person.

A redcap is a type of malevolent, murderous dwarf/goblin. They are said to murder unwary travelers that cross their paths and soak their victims blood into the caps on their heads. They must kill regularly because if their cap dries then the redcap will die. Though not my first time coming across a redcap, the one that comes specifically to mind was the redcap in Jackaby. The redcap in the book and the way he deceived others and the manor in which he murdered people was a bit terrifying. And anyone who wears a blood soaked hat is not someone I want to mess with.

Tracker Jackers

In a way, I’ve encountered wasps before in real life and have bolted for dear life. I would be absolutely horrified to meet Tracker Jackers. Found in The Hunger GamesTracker Jackers are created by the capital. They’re larger than regular wasps and gold colored. Their stings cause raised lumps the size of plums on their victims and their venom causes hallucinations, or after a large amount of them, death. Like their name implies, Tracker Jackers will track down and try to kill their victims. I am terrified of wasps already without having them supersized and extra deadly.

That’s my list! What fictional monster’s would you not want to encounter in person? Do you agree with my list? Share in the comments below!!

Good Hunting!!!

  1. Oh my God I would hate to meet Aragog or any of his kin!! I hate spiders!!!
Also, I never would have considered Tracker Jackers for this prompt, but I can’t possibly imagine encountering them, that would drive me literally insane.

    1. I tried to think about creatures that already scared me and find their monster equivalent, which was a little terrifying to start considering. Aragog would frighten me so badly, I hate spiders with a passion as well – they’re just so creepy!
      Thanks for stopping by!!

    1. Right? What’s with that? These monsters need to refine their palettes! That’s cool that you came across the Kappa in your research! Whats the plot of your book if you don’t mind me asking? I’d love to hear about it!
      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. The spiders in the movie freaked my mum out xD I wasn’t that bothered though cause erm I’m not fussed bout spiders though I gotta say, wouldn’t like a spider that size near me no thanks. I have a limit. Tracker Jackers…god they’d be a nightmare – let’s not imagine ever encountering those awful things
